History
This quick history of Great Island is provided by our good friend and neighbor, and Island Historian, Bob Crook:
Great Island is the largest island in point Judith pond which is itself the largest of Rhode Island’s tidal ponds encompassing some 1530 acres. Great Island, 150 acres in area, is a mile and one half long and a half a mile wide at its widest point with over three miles of shoreline.
The bridge to Great Island was constructed in 1958 in the aftermath of hurricane Carol in 1954.
Today there are over 380 families on our Island, with 40% of these living here year round.
Take time to appreciate the aerial photos, throughout the web site, provided to us by another friend of 50 years, Wayne Davis, who currently flies spotting fish for commercial fishermen.
